Dr. Jason Tan - (Gynaecologic Oncologist)
Dr. Jason Tan was raised and educated in Perth, completing his medical degree at the University of Western Australia. He subsequently completed 6 years of specialist training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and was granted Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2007. Further specialist training gained him a second fellowship in advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy.
Dr. Tan then undertook further specialisation in Gynaecological Oncology, completing an additional 3 years of training in Melbourne, Brisbane and at the Ariake Cancer Research Centre in Tokyo – to gain his subspecialist Certification in Gynaecological Oncology (CGO) in 2010. He completed his final fellowship in Upper GI Surgery at the Sir Charles Gardner Hospital, in Perth.
Jason’s particular area of interest is Surgical Oncology – the surgical management of cancer – and he specialises in the laparoscopic treatment of gynaecological cancer. He will see patients with cancers of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, uterus, vulva and vagina. Dr. Tan will also accept referrals for benign gynaecological conditions requiring complex surgery, such as severe endometriosis, fibroids and complex pelvic masses, as well as the investigation and management of abnormal PAP smears.
In addition to his private practice, Jason devotes half his time to the public health service as Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist at King Edward Memorial Hospital, which includes teaching and training for medical trainees and junior doctors. Other appointments include Lead Clinician (Gynaecology) of Western Australia Cancer and Palliative Care Network and preceptor at various surgical skills development workshops.
Dr Jason Tan is the first Gynaecologist/GynaeOncologist in Western Australia to offer robotic surgery using the DaVinci robot. Although there is no firm evidence to support the use of robotic surgery over laparoscopic surgery. The use of robotic technology allows more complicated surgeries to be achieved via a minimally invasive approach due to its better vision and dexterity of the robotic instrumentation.

Your anaesthetist will contact you via telephone in the days leading up to your surgery to do a Pre-operative Assessment.
Pre-operative Assessment:
Most patients will be assessed over the telephone and in person on the day of their surgery. If there are specific medical issues, an appointment to see Dr. McDonnell may be necessary. If you have specific issues you would like to discuss in person with Dr. McDonnell before your surgery, he is more than happy to arrange a time to see you. The pre-operative assessment will cover a number of areas related to your upcoming surgery and Dr. McDonnell will discuss specific plans for the type of anaesthesia to be provided as well as the management of your pain relief after your surgery.
Smoking and Alcohol:
It is preferable to stop smoking prior to your operation as this will assist your recovery and potentially decrease complications associated with the surgery. If this is not possible, then please do not smoke on the day of your operation.
Refrain from alcohol for at least 1-2 days prior to your surgery.
Nausea and Vomiting:
Many patients are worried about feeling sick after their operation. All patients will be given medication during their anaesthetic to prevent nausea and vomiting and patients at particularly high risk will have a number of medications and strategies employed to prevent this. Despite this, a small percentage may still feel sick afterwards and this may be difficult to control.
